Age Rating Analysis

'Round The Bend' contains emotional distress and unsuitable themes for a younger audience. The film ratings below are the common age certificate thriller films have which underlines that it is not for younger children. Our film contains aspects of mild violence, moderate swearing and also emotional distress. The following underlines what is each age certificate covers:

"Films under this category are considered to be unsuitable for very young people. Those aged under 12 years are only admitted if accompanied by an adult, aged at least 18 years, at all times during the motion picture. However, it is generally not recommended that children under 12 years should watch the film. Films under this category can contain mature themes, discrimination, soft drugs, moderate swear words, infrequent strong language and moderate violence, sex references and nudity. Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sexual violence may be implied or briefly indicated."

"Nobody younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category can contain adult themes, hard drugs, frequent strong language and limited use of very strong language, strong violence and strong sex references, and nudity without graphic detail. Sexual activity may be portrayed but without any strong detail. Sexual violence may be shown if discreet and justified by context."

"Nobody younger than 18 can rent or buy an 18-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category do not have limitation on the bad language that is used. Hard drugs are generally allowed, and explicit sex references along with detailed sexual activity are also allowed. Scenes of strong real sex may be permitted if justified by the context. Very strong, gory, and/or sadistic violence is usually permitted. Strong sexual violence is permitted unless it is eroticised or excessively graphic."



We have decided to give our film the age rating of '15' due to the sensitive plot involved in the film e.g. Lily's kidnapping. The kidnapping plot can be a very sensitive subject to viewers and may cause distress for younger audiences. This is why we have rated it '15' as other aspects do not The film will also have a moderate use of bad language by the characters and violence will also be relevant in the film although this will not be aggressive.

Similar crime thriller films with a kidnapping plot includes Taken which was rated '18' due to the high violence, swearing, sex references and sensitive subject that the film was based around. On the other hand, out film does not have the intense violence that this film has or the sexual references.

Analysis of target audience

Because we have declared that the age rating for 'Round The Bend' is aged 15 it highlights that this film is suitable for individuals aged 15 and above. One reason why we have decided to give our film this age certificate is because this age also attracts the most customers.

This graph from the MPAA highlights that from the ages of 12-40 are the people who go to the cinema
to watch the most films. This is good as a lot of young adults from 15-40 will attend the see our film and
due to our film being suitable for ages 15+ it underlines why we have chosen this target audience.

This chart shows which gender is most likely to watch our movie. Being very close, just over
 50% of our potential audience may be women, however with approx. 49% male audience, I believe
that our film will be able to attract a larger male audience due to the male dominated film that
we have created. As our film is about the thrill and chilling storyline men are stereotyped to
watch these types of film, on the other hand women may be more likely to attend films
such as chick flicks or comedies. 

This graph accentuates the annual usage of the cinema per customer. On the left hand side
the ages 14-25 years are the most popular film category which our film age falls into and on the right
hand side in the last year, those who are aged between 14-24 watch up to 10+ new films a year. This
underlines that our audience have money to watch new films and possibly have the social
time also. 

The Entitlement Film Analysis

The Entitlement is the most recent crime thriller film that I have analysed. The film includes the plot of kidnapping similar to the film I am doing.

This is the first shot that appears when watching the film and shows the audience that the film that they are watching is an independent and own developed movie of high quality. The black background connotes that they base films of dark genres including thriller and horror whereas the logo of block building may represent that they set these films is famous cities including new York where there are a lot of sky scraper buildings.

The establishing shot immediately shows the audience that the film is set in the very reputable city of New York a famous city all over the world. This underlines that the audience will already know context about this notorious location. Furthermore the high angle shot of the city connotes to the audience that residents that live in New York are victims and will be targeted throughout the film which underlines the story line of the film. The dim lighting in this shot doesn’t allow the audience to see the in depth detail of this shot which symbolises

that the city is set for destruction or bad events are about to take place in this city.

This wide shot establishes a building from the inside. The lighting in the background is very dim which highlights the time zone that it is about to become the evening. The audience cannot see the people who are walking into the building as they are black and look like shadows which is key convention of thriller films which causes mystery and unease as they cannot see who these character are.

This is a high angle wide shot out of the ceiling which shows a bright ambient lighting which signifies that in the light it is good and darker lighting is used to symbolise bad events. The title of the film also appears in this shot which is difficult for the audience to see due to the similar colours. This represents that the title is not significant and is not the main focus in this shot as the audience will be drawn into the background of the sky which connotes it significance to the film.

This shot is an over the shoulder shot as we see two characters in the clip. The main focus is on the character in the front of the shot as the character in the background is focused out. The character in the front of the shot is wearing both a grey top and grey cap which symbolises the dull person that the character is which connotes to the audience that he is uninteresting. Furthermore, in the background the audience can vaguely make out a doctors coat which highlights that he is in fact a doctor. High contrast lighting is also apparent in this shot. The light is on one half of  the dominant character’s face whereas the other half is dark highlighting that this character has a split personality.

This low angle shot makes this character seem superior and with the power. It also implies the importance that this character has. The clothing of the character is very formal as he is wearing a suit which connotes to the audience that he is professional businessman and is involved with the character in the previous shots. The lighting from the foreground symbolises that this character is a good person in this film and the facial expression that the character has is also happy which connotes to the audience the bright and professional character they are.

This wide shot shows the character sitting alone in the library as there are books on the right hand side of the shot. We can also see down the left side that all of the tables and chair are also empty which connotes to the audience that the character does not have any friends and is a bit of a loner. The lighting is very low key although the audience are able to see that he is studying due to the props on the table including books and paperwork. This highlights that he could be a student or enjoys researching.

The shot then zooms into the paperwork that the character is looking at. The close up on the page shows the audience the details about the character including his criminal history and attempted suicide. This density of information being revealed in this shot highlights that the character is in fact not a good person but has a past of terrible behaviour. The document looks formal due to its structured layout which connotes that this is a formal piece of information about the character.

 This close up shot shows the images of two characters. The black and white could represent that these images are old and dated highlighting that the male image is the character in the previous shot. This leave mystery and audience are unaware of female character in this shot building tension amongst the audience. The slight  of a newspaper in the right hand top corner indicates that these images are associated with the newspaper which signifies that these character have been involved in the press again building tension.

Taken Film Analysis

Taken is a popular crime thriller that also includes the plot of kidnapping.

This is the first image we see as the films begins. The shot is of the production company of the film and is the infamous 20^th century fox. This particular studio is known for its successful films so viewers will expect to see  a well produced film. The angle that we see the logo from is a low angle which connotes that 20^th century fox is a superior  film studios and are the very best and the use of dim lighting also connotes that there is still mystery involved in their films. The use of spotlights highlights to the audience that this is a conventional Hollywood film and Hollywood films are often associated with Syd Field’s 3 act plot structure.

 This is a big close up of a dominant party hat which says happy birthday which highlights that it is somebodies birthday, more specifically a child. The bright colours from the balloon and the hat connotes that this is a happy and enthusiastic time for the individual as birthdays are meant to be enjoyable occasions. The lighting is dim but this is not shown clearly as the frame stock is slightly fuzzy which underlines that this is a video which has been pre-recorded and from a previous time, for example a family film. This connotes that a person is reminiscing back to a time which is a happy time for them.

The quick cut then introduces more characters in this deep shot which shows to characters and an object. The character resembles and mother and daughter due to how the characters are positioned which connotes that there is a strong family link in the film. Furthermore the dominant figure in this show is also the horse which was gift opened up by the young girl connoting her innocence and showing the viewers her interests. This highlights that horses mat reoccur in the film and symbolise innocence and childhood. The lighting in this shot is high key lighting, however the grainy stock connotes that this is a home video of some sort. The text on this screen is positioned so that the focus still remains on the character.

 The shot then quickly cuts to this with a man sleeping which signifies that the grainy affect film clip was in fact him dreaming. This causes tension as the audience do not know how the girl or women is related to the man as he was not seen in the previous clip. The low key lighting doesn’t allow the audience to see much of the characters surroundings which leave the audience with unease and the sense of awareness. Low key lighting and shadows (as seen reflecting on the wall) are conventions of crime thriller films.

 The film continues and see’s him waking up. This long wide shot establishes the setting the character is in. the take away boxes on the table underline to the audience that he is living alone and the empty hallway and living room also show no sign of any other characters which highlights that he Is living alone. The high contrast lighting supported by the lamp connotes that there is a good and bad side to this setting or for the character themselves. The text on the screen says Liam Neeson making viewers aware of the actor who is famous for playing previous heroic roles In action/thriller films which symbolises that Liam Neeson will again be the hero in this film.

This wide shot show the character concentrated on reading the flyer in his hand. This flyer may represent something special or important in the storyline. Furthermore the high contrast lighting focuses the audience on the character in the shot and not anything in the surrounding  highlighting that this character is a ray of home compared to the dull surroundings. The light which is shone on the character allows us to see the colour that he is wearing which is a light grey. Often this colour is associated with boring and old which could signify the characters personality, dated and boring which connotes to the audience the dull person that he is.

 This shot is very important. The image in the photo frame is the dominant in this shot as it allows us to see a young girl riding on the horse. This shows us that the younger child from the character’s dream is this girl and to support this there is also a horse. This underlines that the character may be her father and also has significant role in the whole of the film. The high key lighting allows the audience to clearly see this image and acknowledge the relationship between the father and character. The title also appears in this shot. The simple and bold title efficiently connotes to the audience that somebody is ‘taken’ and with the girl being beside this title connotes to the audience that it may be the girl who gets taken.  

 This close up clearly shows the upper half of the character face. The high key ambience in the shot allows us to see the colour that the character is wearing. Again this is a dark grey which symbolises to the audience the dull and boring person that he is considering that he is also a father. This shot gives a clear idea of how the character looks and we can see that he is happy which highlights that he is enjoying a conversation. Also the lighting highlights the wrinkles on his face representing his age and tiredness.

This shot is a deep shot as it allows the audience to see significant items in the background of the shot as well as the character themselves in the front of the shot. We can see the strained expression of the character with the parcel he is wrapping up connoting to the audience that the character has a history of being a perfectionist. It can also suggest that the gift is important to he so he has to ensure that it is perfect. The object in the background is his suit which connotes to the audience that he is attending a formal event which is why he is making sure the parcel is wrapped appropriately.

Se7en Film Analysis

Se7en

This is the title credits for the classic crime thriller film ‘Se7en’.

This close up shot emphasises that the book is in focus in this shot. Drawing attention to the book allows the viewers to notice the rigid edges of the book underlining that the book is old. The background of the shit is not in focus leaving the viewers to only focus on the book and text in the shot. Furthermore, the contrasting lighting in this show connotes the good and bad uses of this book or the message the book brings out building tension about why this book is significant. The white text positioned slightly right centre stands out from the dull colours in the background. This allows the audience to clearly see that new line cinema who is infamous for its thriller films make have created this movie so viewers know that they are going to watch a good film.

The overhead shot shows a pair of hands placed on square pieces of paper which underlines that they could be measuring the hands. Again the shot contains high contrast lighting which vaguely allows the audience to see one of the hands which is very veiny and looks grey. This connotes to the audience that the person whose hands they are is dead or severely ill due to the condition of their skin. The high contrast lighting can again highlight to the audience that the person whose hands they are has a good or bad aspect to them. The white text again stands out so the audience acknowledges that the film is directed by David Fincher who is known for producing previous successful thriller films including fight club. This will connote to the audience that will be watching a well structured thriller film.

 This big close up shows a man peeling his skin off with a metal blade. This action already highlights the frantic and unsettling atmosphere the thriller film holds and can build tension to see why this is happening. Also the lighting in the background of this shot is very dark so the audience cannot see anything in the background. This can cause mystery and unease amongst the audience as they do not know what is around this person, or who is.

 This is the name of the film. The font that is used for the title is rigid which may be used to symbolise the rigid storyline the film has connoting to the audience the plot is strange and unusual. Also the title itself has the number ‘7’ in it to replace the ‘V’ in the title. This underlines to the audience that this is a significant number throughout the film and has great importance. The colour of the title contrasts with the very black background which may represent the dark themes and the title itself representing good, especially with the number 7.

This shot shows a big close up shot of a book. We can see that a shadow (a thriller convention) has formed on the book which shows that an individual is reading or researching about something as he is getting rid of irrelevant information. This connotes to the audience that this could be a doctor as the word ‘pregnant’ is at the top of the page so it involves women who are often stereotyped to be vulnerable and weak. Again high contrast lighting is apparent in this shot as the shadows doesn’t allow the audience to clearly see the words on the page compared to the left hand side where the words are more clearer. This connotes that information on this page secretive and is also bad.

 This shot shows an image of a young boy’s eyes being crossed out. This could represent the person who crosses the child’s eyes out is paranoid that the child is staring at them.  This creates an unsettling and uneasy atmosphere as children are also stereotyped to be victims which are apparent in thriller films. The low key lighting in the shot also makes it difficult for the audience to see anything other than the image of the boy and the text. The text in this shot is a lot larger and is at centre screen which connotes that they want this to be noticed and because of the quick cuts in the opening the image of the boy is not focused on although this does catch the eye of the audience.

 This shot shows a close up of a man sticking nail tape down onto the book. The man’s hands in this shot are covered in small cuts and have a plaster on it. This connotes that the man has had a fight or been doing something dangerous for his hands to be so distort and injured. This can symbolise that this character is a dangerous person as they are careless. The lighting in this shot is dim although there is enough light to see what the character is doing and what his hands look like.

 This overhead shot zooms into the images that are placed on the surface. The images are in black and white which highlights the era that this thriller film has been set in previous eras and not in modern time. The images are of dead people who have been bandaged up which connotes to the audience that the setting is in a laboratory of some sort highlighting that murder is another relevant topic to the film which builds tension due to this. Because of the pictures of victims it highlights that detectives and police are also involved which is another thriller convention.

This big close  up of the dollar bills highlights that money may be relevant in the film. Money is often a common convention of a crime thriller film as crime can often be motivated for money. This shot also focuses on the word ‘god’ which signifies that religious morals and conspiracies may also be relevant which can be hugely controversial. This builds tension because binary oppositions good and bad are often represented through religious aspects. 

Summit Entertainment Logo Analysis

Below is 'Summit Entertainment' production company logo, which i have de/connontated. This therefore has great significance to the viewers i order for them to recognize that the film they are watching is Summit Entertainment  production. 

-          The dark background connotes to the audience that the company create themes that are dark and spooky. This underlines that the film could be potentially associated with the genres of thriller or horror.

-          The text of ‘Summit’ stands our due to the large font which signifies that they are superior and have wealth. This connotes that they want the audience to think of them as a powerful production company.

-          The outline of a mountain is used as the trademark. This connotes to the audience that the company are a ‘high’ as a mountain in the context that they are the ‘top’ film company and are better than competitors.

-          The blue shade in the trademark ‘mountain outline’ represents that they are fresh and new with film productions and could also connote their intensity.

-          The use of the black background and white text could represent the use of good and bad binary oppositions and also help the blue to emphasis the superior fresh company that they are. 

Media Institution- Summit Entertainment

‘Summit Entertainment’ is also an American based film studio which is apart Lions Gate Entertainment. The reputable film company was founded in 1991 by Bernd Eichinger, Arnon Milchan and Andrew G. Vajna, but did not establish as a film studio company until the 1990’s where they expanded to produce and finance film making. From the 1990’s the company became recognised for the release of leading foreign sales and production making other production companies aware of their growing empire. It was not until April 2007 that the company become a heavily full motion studio.

In 2007 Robert G. Freidman the former vice chair man raised the budgeted amount of money in order to finance a full acquired license which allowed Summit Entertainment to create full production slate’s of fill and was able to distribute its own pictures in the United States where the large successes of films became apparent. Further down the line, earlier in 2012 the company have also become subsidiary to parent Lionsgate a phenomenal production company. This allowed them to bring together two of the most independent leading studio’s and created a prestigious brand.

‘Summit Entertainment’ do not produce films for a niche audience unlike twisted pictures of Pixar, but create genre of films that appeal to the mass market. Being responsible for hugely successful films such as ‘RED’, ‘The Twilight Saga’ and ‘American Pie’ the company have grossed more than $283,000,000 with their most recent Twilight film alone. This large figure highlights the masses of success their blockbuster films produce.  However, the company’s first major success came from the production of the film  American Pie which has grossed more than $235,000,000 since its release date, also being responsible for making Summit Entertainment the production company that they are recognised for today.

Focusing more on the Thriller genre, Summit Entertainment are responsible for producing the likes of ‘Never Back Down’ grossing more that $24,000,000 and producing the infamous crime thriller ‘Hurt Locker’ which has almost grossed $50,000,000. These being some of the thriller being produced more noticeable ones include the classic ‘RED’ which has a $186,000,000 gross figure and other films such as ‘Push’, ‘Gone’ and ‘The Darkest Hour’. Summit Entertainment profoundly known for their versatile range of films allows them to attract audiences that enjoy a range of films targeting both the mass and niche market. More blockbuster type films such as the fantasy ‘Twilight’ targeting the mass market, whereas ‘Push’ targets a more niche market.

Summit Entertainment hold a licence to distribute under the name Summit Entertainment LP, with them already distributing over 40 films to the audience. This underlines the independent organisation that Summit Entertainment expresses.

New Line Cinema Logo Analysis

Below is 'New Line Cinemas' production company logo which i have de/connotated.  This therefore has great significance to the viewers in order for them to recognise that the film they are watching is a New Line Cinema production. 

• The blue colour around the film strip to represent the film strip as magnificent, fresh and new. Contrasting the black background which could indicate that everything else is dark and boring compared to the midnight blue which represents e.g. superior film.

• A film strip, of which a film or image used to be imprinted on. This indicates that they are associated or relevant to filming reflecting that they are a film based production company.

• On the right hand side of the image there is a broken off/ disfigured part of the film strip which has been placed over the corner of the strip. This accentuates the possibility of the films being twisted or different compared to other films highlighting unique and different films. 

• In the centre of the logo the text is the name of the production company. The bright white colour contrasts the darker colours in the logo, and larger font making it stand out and un missable on the screen so that viewers see and recognise the company's logo.  

• The sub heading below the company name gives recognition to the superior company that they have merged with. The white writing makes us notice this so that again we recognise this.

Media Institution- New Line Cinema

‘New Line Cinema’ is an American based Production Company, was founded in 1967. The company itself acts as a production company and has a high reputation due to the creativity and innovation that they build their films upon. New Line Cinema has a mass audience that their mainstream films are aimed at worldwide, but also specialize in creating films for a niche audience for audiences to enjoy around the world. Throughout New Line Cinema’s four decade history the production company have produced some of the most successful films in history including the infamous Lord of the Rings trilogy which grossed a combined total of $3billion dollars worldwide.

In 2008 New Line Cinema merged with notorious oligolopy Production Company Warner Bros therefore functioning and maximizing film performance alongside Warner Bros. Yet, giving New Line cinema the advantage of producing, marketing and distributing rights separately.

New Line cinema does not specialize in producing a specific genre film, but instead produces a wide variety of film genre’s that attract a larger mass audience. For example the fantasy genre ‘lord of the rings’ generating billions of dollars in revenue for the company, comedy films such as ‘wedding crashes’ and ‘horrible bosses’ did exceptionally well in cinema grossing over £300 million dollars in box office. The franchise horror sequence ‘final destination’ and nightmare on elm street also brought in a large amount of revenue. New Line Cinema mainstream films budgets were often in between $50million to $100million, with lord of the rings being one of the most expensive New Line Cinema Budgets.  These high budgets determine that the audiences should see a well-made films.

One of New Line Cinema’s genres that they are known for is their Thriller films, for example producing the final destination, history of violence and rush hour.  All of these films are well-known and have done incredibly well for the company expressing the well structured thrillers that the company produces. Linking to my coursework, New Line Cinema’s production of crime thriller sub genre’s, New Line Cinema have also suited this very well, for instance, seven one of most popular crime thriller films grossed over $100milion worldwide. Other crime thriller that New Line cinema have produced include Fraction, Domino and Rush Hour, a well known sequel with a hybrid of thriller, crime and comedy.

New Line Cinema are also distributors, having their own segment of the company called ‘New Line Home Entertainment’ giving them the right to sell DVD’s under their own name and have the license. Up until 2009, ‘Alliance films’, and the UK’s ‘Entertainment Film Distributors’ have been sold license authority to sell the films off to theaters and cinema’s around the world for a percentage of profits. 

Analysis of Opening Film Sequence

The opening sequence that I have decided to analyse is 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2'. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a drama-fanstasy movie directed by David Yates who also directed the previous three Harry Potter movies which were all major successes around the world. I have decided to analyse the following film as the opening sequence has a very bold and distinctive opening compared to other films in the industry. This opening sequence unlike many other film openings does not have the lengthy credits naming actors and producers in the beginning as the only credits which are shown within the first two minutes of the film is the institution that the film title itself. This allows the viewers to immediently focus on the filming and not draw larger amounts of attention to the credits itself.

This screenshot is the very first image we get when the film starts. The shot shows the viewers the current setting of the movie and quickly zooms into the centre of the location onto the small island. The extreme long shot of the location gives the viewers the chance to realise that location is very isolated with nobody else around which makes the viewers unsettled as the lighting in this shot is also very dim so they cannot see much. In the background of this shot the image of mountains can be seen which will make the viewers think about why such a desrted and unlikley location may be shown right at the beginning of the film building tension from the very start. The dark lighting immedienly connotes that dark movie that the film is, so this could imply to the viewers that the film could potentially be a thriller and based on dark events.

This is the second screenshot that I believe to be the most significant within the opening sequence. The significant object in this shot is a wand and can underline to the viewers that the wand is a very important object throughout the whole film. Also the genre could include the concepts of magic and fantasy due to wands being a key convention of magicians and identifies itself as a fantasy genre convention. The mid view shot shows a person holding a wand with a dead person in the background which highlights that somebody has been killed previously and that the wand belongs to him which can suggest to the viewers that the wand is being stolen. The character that is holding the wand is dressed in a black as we can see the lower arm. By wearing the colour black could associate them with being dark and evil, dressed in a stereotypical villian colour.

This screenshot shows the first main character in the film holding the wand. This immediently shows the viewers that this character is the villian type character due to his abnormal presence and again the colours that he is wearing which are black and connotes the unsettling atmosphere around him. This shot shows the villian lord voldermort, located in a deserted island next to a dead body emphasising the theme of mystrey and hatred. Lord Voldermorts appearance is very inhuman, with unusual coloured skin, disfigured face and long nails expressing similarities to witches who are known for their unusually long nails and abnormal body shapes. This introduces the idea to the viewers that he is similar to a witch, with evil plans and dominance shaping the stereotypical villian.

 This is a screen shot of the production companies trademark showing the viewers that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a Warner Bros production. Due to this being the institution, viewers would expect to see a large budgeted blockbuster movie as a result of the high reputation that Warner Bros has. Warner Bros are known worldwide for producing some of the very best blockbusters in the twentieth century including anothet thriller Batman: The Dark Knight. The clouds that are surrounding the production logo signifies that the films genre is potentially a thriller and the use of clouds is unsettling as the viewers are not able to see past them buliding tension into what the shot is zooming into. The dark lighting also helps build chilling shot as it blocks the oncoming shot after the production logo so viewers are left in suspense.

 This screenshot show abnormal and inhuman characters in the air. This foreshadows the genre of fanstasy as unknown forms of life are being used which makes this film a different genre from others. The colour of these creatures are also a black which symbolizes that they are evil and a potential sign of death similar to the first villian, Lord Voldermort who is also wearing the colour black. In the background we see the first bright lighting which could highlight that the castle type building will be a ray of hope and strength within the film and that it is a setting that will be used at some point during the film. The creatures called 'dementors' are facing towards the castle undermines that they are invading the castle which implies to the viewers that the castle is an unsafe territory.

 This long shot shows a character facing away from the camera shot. This can therefore build tension into who the character is and what they look like as this shot only shows the back of the character. This long shot allows the viewers to see the whole figure standing in an archway in a building. The posture of the charatcer is very upright looking out of the castle drawing attetion  to his all black apearance which symbolises evilness. The character is looking out of a building where there is lighting which echos that the character is looking out of the castle which was in the previous shot where a bright light was shone amungst it. This raises the possiblilty that the character is facing good vs evil due to the lighting in the previous shot symbolising hope.

 The layout for the film title is a duplicate of the production institition shot as it is amungst the clouds again. The font of the title is a pointy and the 'P' in potter resembles the shape of lightning which underlines that the character names Harry Potter is a ray of lightining, signifying that he is hope and power within the film. The dark and dim lighting again brings the viewers back into a unsettling atmosphere as they do not know what shot is going to appear after the clouds which block the forecoming shot out. The use of clouds can also be classed as pathetic fallacy- the weather (i.e. clouds/rain) or a signifier prompting that something bad is going to happen as the plot or main event of the film.

This first icon that the viewers will see in this shot will be the grave within the sand. The grave stone underlines to the viewers that another character is dead, but this is a contrast to the second screen shot where a dead person is just layed out without a grave. This suggests the character beside the grave stone is a good friend or family of the dead person. The first shot of Harry Potter that we see is from the reflection of the mirror where we see a normal human being with glasses highlighting that he is also one of  the main charcaters who is not a creature raising the possibility that he is the good guy amongst the creatures. The piece of mirror could also be a potentially important object throughout the film. The sandy setting shows that the character is in an exotic place with fairly bright lighting, a large contrast to the first shot of the opening sequence.

This screen shot shows a deserted and isolated location, similar to the first shot, yet there is one charcter in this shot. This extreme long shot shows the character kneeling infront of a grave suggesting to the viewers that he is showing his respects to a friend of his. The clothing of Harry is very distinctive as this is a large contrast compared to the all black that we have seen in the previous shots highlighting that this is the good character within the film whereas the other characters have been wearing all black. The lighting in this shot is also bright again contrasting the dark and dim lighting that viewers have been seeing throughout the majority of the opening sequence allowing the viewers to have a clear view of the setting and have a sense of ease instead of being in suspense when the setting is normally dark as they can see the surrondings.
