Age Rating Analysis
'Round The Bend' contains emotional distress and unsuitable themes for a younger audience. The film ratings below are the common age certificate thriller films have which underlines that it is not for younger children. Our film contains aspects of mild violence, moderate swearing and also emotional distress. The following underlines what is each age certificate covers:
"Films under this category are considered to be unsuitable for very young people. Those aged under 12 years are only admitted if accompanied by an adult, aged at least 18 years, at all times during the motion picture. However, it is generally not recommended that children under 12 years should watch the film. Films under this category can contain mature themes, discrimination, soft drugs, moderate swear words, infrequent strong language and moderate violence, sex references and nudity. Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sexual violence may be implied or briefly indicated."
"Nobody younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category can contain adult themes, hard drugs, frequent strong language and limited use of very strong language, strong violence and strong sex references, and nudity without graphic detail. We have decided to give our film the age rating of '15' due to the sensitive plot involved in the film e.g. Lily's kidnapping. The kidnapping plot can be a very sensitive subject to viewers and may cause distress for younger audiences. This is why we have rated it '15' as other aspects do not The film will also have a moderate use of bad language by the characters and violence will also be relevant in the film although this will not be aggressive.
Similar crime thriller films with a kidnapping plot includes Taken which was rated '18' due to the high violence, swearing, sex references and sensitive subject that the film was based around. On the other hand, out film does not have the intense violence that this film has or the sexual references.

Thriller Audience Research- Questionnaire Results
These are the results from the questionnaire that I distributed to 10 participants. The following are their responses the questions.
These are the results from the questionnaire. I will now analyse the results that are presented.
1) For this question I asked an audience which would most likely watch a thriller film. From the basis of previous audience research the questionnaire was handed out to 40% aged 12-20, 20% aged 21-19, 30% aged 30-39 and lastly only one participant, 10% who was 40-49 years of age. I decided to do this as it will give me responses from people who are of different age groups. This is good and different age groups are likely to have a more differentiated view on films providing me with a widened response throughout the questionnaire.
2) In order to ensure that the gender's were equal I ensured that I asked the same about of females as males. I did this because it will provide more unbiased results throughout the questionnaire. Even though it is more likely that a male will watch a thriller film, having a female's point of view can allow us to implement things in order to appeal to them more.
3) Based on the results that I got back, only one participant watched a thriller film daily, and three others watched it weekly,underlining that they are they are a niche thriller audience as they watch this often. However, on the other hand a further three watched a thriller film fortnightly, and three more watching it monthly which connotes that a mass audience still watches a thriller film often. Although my questionnaire was not rationed to large participants, from these respondents it is clear that thriller films are often watched.
4) From the options provided, a crime thriller was the most popular choice gaining 30% of the participants to vote for this sub-genre highlighting that this is going to be a successful sub-genre for our film. The second most popular choice was 'comedy' combined with Sci-fi which I expected as this was a mainstream choice which most people enjoy, commonly doing very well in the cinema. Action, psychological and supernatural sub-genres all had one participant voting for them highlighting that these were also successful choices which we could have based our film on. The fact that a crime thriller was the most popular makes us more confident that the audience will enjoy this film.
5) The most popular response was the film 'Taken' which our participants mentioned twice which is ideal as I have already analysed this film. Moreover, further films mentioned such as 'Domino' Rush Hour' and 'War of the worlds' which were all singularly mentioned making it difficult to analyse. From these responses we was able to interpret that Taken was the most popular as it was mentioned twice giving whereas the other films were mentioned alone. The name of films given all have different sub-genre's highlighting the connection with the previous film, for example 'Scary Movie' has a comedy sub-genre, and 'War of the Worlds' has a sci-fi sub genre. More importantly, Taken the most stated film has a crime sub-genre which is what have based our thriller sub-genre on as the participants seem to like it.
6) Based on the results of these responses thriller, comedy and sci-fi was the most mentioned genre that the participants classed as their favorites which is beneficial to us as we have based our opening on a thriller film. Secondly, action was also chosen by 40% of participants as it was mentioned four times highlighting that this is also another successful genre that the audience likes. 30% of participants also chose crime as one of their favorite film choices which is relevant to us as our sub-genre is 'crime' underlining that our crime thriller will be successful among the target audience.
7) Undoubtedly, the plot and story line was the main thing that appealed to the audience in order to attract them to come and watch the film, which means that we must apply a unique story line to our film. We have implemented the theme of 'kidnapping' which will hopefully attract the audience. Secondly, the actors and the title of the film got a 20% response each highlighting that these will also be important, for example we have included actors such as Cillian Murphy who is a well known actor. The title 'Round The Bend' I think is appealing as nobody know's what is round the bend until they approach it which immediently builds tension. Only one participant voted that the producer/director appealed which means that they are not that important to the audience.
8) 80% of our participants recognized the production company 'Summit Entertainment' which is really useful as this confirms to us that they are a well classified and reputable company. This makes us more confident to use this production company as the audience known and recognise the company.
9) The final question highlighted to me all of the typical conventions which the audience expect to see. For example, things such as lighting and music are mostly stated which is good as this accentuates that this is the most important factors that the audience look for in the film opening which is something that we should ensure we have. Darkness is also stated a lot meaning that dark colours, mostly connected with the lighting should be relevant as this is what the audience expect to see.
All of this is very important as it shows us what the audience want to see, for example the storyline is the most appealing item, thriller is a popular genre and the codes and conventions should be implemented. This allows us to adapt all of the aspects stated into our film opening.

Thriller Audience Research- Questionnaire
In order to get a more accurate and precise responses about the film genre I wanted to ask a more direct audience about their thoughts and opinions of film. I have included questions that appeal to both the mass and niche audience as this will able me to adapt the results into audience research.
The questionnaire was completed by 10 participants and I aimed to distribute them evenly.
1) How old are you? I asked this question because it will highlight to me which age group will enjoy watching thriller films, and see whether there is a trend in the responses due to the different age categories. It will also underline that the questionnaire was distributed equally.
2) Are you female/male? I asked this question as it will able to see if there is a difference between the responses from a male viewpoint or female. This will allow me to interpret whether males and females look for a different factors in thriller films.
3) How often do you watch thriller films? This was an important questions as it will narrow down the niche audience from the mass market. For example, a person who watches a thriller daily/weekly are a niche thriller audience compared to those who watch it monthly/yearly. This question will also connote the popularity of thriller films among the participants therefore being either a successful genre to produce or not so successful.
4) What is your favourite sub-genre? I asked this question to see what the most popular sub-genre was that they enjoyed as this would highlight to be the most successful. It will also allow me to see whether crime thrillers was an appropriate choice for my film so that the audience will enjoy it.
5) What is your favourite thriller film? I asked this question as it will give me an insight into what films the participants have enjoyed most. This will allow me to research further into these films and implement the elements into my own film opening.
6) What would you classify as your top 3 genre's? This will highlight to me the most popular genre's that the participants enjoy. It will also show me how successful thriller films are depending on the popularity of the choices that are stated.
7) What attracts you most when watching a thriller film? These are things that the participants can circle so I can clearly be able to see what they enjoy. This will able me to implement these factors into my film opening as the audience prefer these factors.
8) Have you heard of the institution 'Summit Entertainment'? This question will tell me whether the company are well known to the target audience or not and whether they are familiar with the company.
9)What codes and conventions would you expect to see in a thriller film? This question is vital as it will inform me of what the target audience would expect to see for a 'thriller' film and it it vital that I include all of these suggestions in my film opening so the audience will be able to pick these out instantly.
These questionnaire results will be very helpful for me as it will clearly outline to me what the audience will expect to see in the film opening. This will able me to implement these factors into my film opening effectively.
Analysis of target audience
Because we have declared that the age rating for 'Round The Bend' is aged 15 it highlights that this film is suitable for individuals aged 15 and above. One reason why we have decided to give our film this age certificate is because this age also attracts the most customers.

This is good as a lot of young adults from 15-40 will attend the see our film and due to our film being suitable for ages 15+ it underlines why we have chosen this target audience. |

| This chart shows which gender is most likely to watch our movie. Being very close, just over 50% of our potential audience may be women, however with approx. 49% male audience, I believe that our film will be able to attract a larger male audience due to the male dominated film that we have created. As our film is about the thrill and chilling storyline men are stereotyped to watch these types of film, on the other hand women may be more likely to attend films such as chick flicks or comedies. |

This underlines that our audience have money to watch new films and possibly have the social time also. |
Final Film Title
The film title that we have chosen to use for our film opening is:
The font used for the text in this film title is very rigid and eerie due to the cracks in the writing. The cracks and creepy font highlight to the audience that aspects of the film is cracked, for example, Joseph who represents a split personality which the cracks signify to the audience. The font is also grey which makes the text stand out from the dark background allowing the audience to clearly see the title, and the white shadow underlines to the audience the thriller genre due to shadows being a key convention. The white shadow also connotes to the audience the concepts of good being related to the film also. The background on what the text in placed on is black. The black accentuates to the audience the dark genre film that this is, for example both thriller and horror film. The color black is also used to represent evil and cruel intentions which again highlights to the audience some of the key characteristics of the character within our film.
